Seasonal dynamics in the inner Guayas Estuary, Ecuador Boletín de Investigaciones
Marín Jarrín,María José; Marín Jarrín,José R.; Borbor-Córdova,Mercy J.; Espinoza Celi,Maria Esther; Domínguez-Granda,Luis.
ABSTRACT The Guayas estuary in Ecuador is the largest estuarine ecosystem on the Pacific coast of South America. This estuary provides nursery and fisheries habitats, as well as filtering and detoxification services provided by suspension feeders, vegetation, and wetlands. We used oceanographic and meteorological observations to understand the hydrodynamic variability of two areas in the inner part of the estuary, Manglares de Churute and Estero Salado, from February 2016 to February 2017. Churute has less anthropogenic impacts than Estero Salado, which is currently uncoupled from river flow and highly influenced by Guayaquil, the second largest city in Ecuador, and adjacent shrimp pond effluents. The influences from the ocean and river on Churute include...

Seasonal variability on the structure of sublittoral macrozoobenthic association in the Patos Lagoon estuary, southern Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Colling,Leonir A.; Bemvenuti,Carlos E.; Gandra,Michel S..
The aim of this study is to analyze and relate the spatial-temporal variability of macrozoobenthic assemblages to bottom characteristics and salinity fluctuations, in an estuarine shallow water region of Patos Lagoon. Monthly samples, between September 2002 and August 2003, were taken on six sampling stations (distant 90 m). Three biological samples with a 10 cm diameter corer, one sample for sediment analysis, fortnightly bottom topography measurements, and daily data of temperature and salinity were taken from each station. Two biotic and environmental conditions were identified: the first corresponding to spring and summer months, with low macrozoobenthos densities, low values of salinity, small variations in bottom topographic level and weak...

Seaward pinching out and internal stratigraphy of the Gironde incised valley on the shelf (Bay of Biscay) ArchiMer
Lericolais, Gilles; Berne, Serge; Fenies, Hugues.
An incised paleovalley offshore the estuary mouth of the Gironde River (Southwest France) was evidenced recently (Comptes Rendus de 1'Academie des Sciences de Paris 326 (1998) 701). Nevertheless its seaward extension to the shelf break was still unknown. New high-resolution geophysical data were acquired on the continental shelf in order to follow the incision until the shelf break. After processing the seismic lines, the shape of the valley was identified and the valley-fill in terms of sequence stratigraphy was interpreted. The valley-fill contains a single sequence corresponding to a fifth-order cycle (20 kyr). The three Systems Tracks described onshore by Alien and Posamentier (Journal of Sedimentary Petrology 63 (1993) 378; SEPM (Society for...

Spatio-seasonal patterns of demersal fish communities on the French Guiana Coast ArchiMer
Le Joncour, Anna; Blanchard, Fabian; Tagliarolo, Morgana.
Estuarine and coastal areas are often considered as hotspots due to their high diversity and ecological importance. However, communities living on those areas are often submitted to fishery and climate change pressures causing modifications on fish assemblages. French Guiana’s coastal shelf is characterised by warm waters with high turbidity and low salinity caused by the large river discharges from the Amazon and nearby estuaries. The high productivity of these areas supports fisheries and aquaculture activities. However, the structure and dynamics of coastal fish populations in French Guiana have seldom been studied. The aim of this study was to understand the effect of environmental conditions, as well as the influence of the coast and nearby estuaries...

Spéciation des contaminants métalliques en milieu estuarien : Intérêt de la modélisation et application au cadmium ArchiMer
Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Dange, Catherine; Thouvenin, Benedicte.
In estuarine environment, cadmium has a nonconservative behavior. It can be present under various species: dissolved (mineral and organic complexes), colloidal and particulate forms (adsorbed, precipitated), or integrated by various mechanisms in the organisms. This distribution is the result of processes (physical, chemical and biological) which are controlled by many factors (salinity, pH, Eh, nature and concentration of suspended matter, primary production). Geochemical modeling is a very useful approach to understand the dynamics of this type of contaminant, especially in the complex systems which are the estuaries. A speciation model was used to simulate the measurements taken (dissolved and particulate Cd) during various cruises carried out in the...

Sulfate-reducing bacteria [rom mangrove swamps II : Their ecology and physiology ArchiMer
Bharathi, Pal; Oak, S; Chandramohan, D.
Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) have been enumerated and physiologically characterized in three mangrove stations along the Zuari estuary. The substrates for counting were lactate, acetate, propionate, butyrate and benzoate. Benzoate oxidizing SRB were widespread and occurred in numbers up to 6.62 x 10(3)/g dry sediment. The next highest in number were lactate utilizing SRB. On an average there were more propionate and butyrate utilizers than acetate utilizers. While Agasaim at the mouth of the estuary harboured highest number of lactate oxidizers, none were detected at Mirabaug upstream during the samplings. The SRB shared many characteristics with Desulfovibrio desulfuricans, D. desulfuricans aestuarii, D. salexigens, Desulfotomaculum orientis, D....

Suspended Sediment Dynamics in the Macrotidal Seine Estuary (France) - Part 1: Numerical Modeling of Turbidity Maximum Dynamics ArchiMer
Grasso, Florent; Verney, Romaric; Le Hir, Pierre; Thouvenin, Benedicte; Schulz, Elisabeth; Kervella, Youenn; Fard, I. Khojasteh Pour; Lemoine, J. -p.; Dumas, Franck; Garnier, Valerie.
Tidal pumping, baroclinic circulation and vertical mixing are known to be the main mechanisms responsible for the estuarine turbidity maximum (ETM) formation. However, the influence of hydro-meteorological conditions on ETM dynamics is still not properly grasped and requires further investigation to be quantified. Based on a realistic 3-dimensional numerical model of the macrotidal Seine Estuary (France) that accounts for mud and sand transport processes, the objective of this study is to quantify the influence of the main forcing (river flow, tides, waves) on the ETM location and mass changes. As expected, the ETM location is strongly modulated by semidiurnal tidal cycles and fortnightly timescales with a high sensitivity to river flow variations. The ETM...

Temporal space-variation of fish larvae in the Gulf of Guayaquil, Ecuador Boletín de Investigaciones
Calderón-Peralta,Gregoria; Ayora-Macías,Gabriela; Solís-Coello,Pilar.
ABSTRACT This study presents the density, taxonomic composition, spatial and temporal distribution of fish larvae in the Gulf of Guayaquil, as well as the relationship with some physical-chemical variables. Samples were collected at 16 stations, taken in the first nautical mile of the external and internal estuary of the gulf, located in front of the province of Guayas and northwest of the island of Puná, during June to December 2012. Surface trawls were carried out with a simple conical network (mesh eye: 300 μm; mouth diameter: 0.3 m; length: 1.2 m). Temperature, salinity, and transparency were measured before each drag. Significant differences were detected between zones, registering higher temperatures, lower salinity, and transparency in the interior...

The effect of tidal range on the flushing of ammonium from intertidal sediments of the Tagus estuary, Portugal ArchiMer
Cabrita, Mt; Catarino, F; Vale, C.
The time-course evolution of ammonium concentration has been examined in the flood water during the first 25 min of tidal inundation. The way this transport fluctuates with the tidal ranges and wind conditions was investigated. Flood water was collected at three sites, located along a transect from the lower to the upper intertidal area of the Tagus estuary. At spring and intermediate tides, the periods of air exposure vary slightly along the transect due to the high tidal amplitude and the flatness of the area, but the upper site remains uncovered at neap tide over the entire tidal cycle. At each site, sampling was performed at different tidal ranges covering the neap-spring tidal cycle and wind conditions. Ammonium was determined in the flood water at...

The mosaic of habitats of the Seine estuary: Insights from food-web modelling and network analysis ArchiMer
Tecchio, Samuele; Rius, Antonio; Dauvin, Jean-claude; Lobry, Jeremy; Lassalle, Geraldine; Morin, Jocelyne; Bacq, Nicolas; Cachera, Marie; Chaalali, Aurelie; Villanueva, Ching-maria; Niquil, Nathalie.
Ecological network analysis was applied in the Seine estuary ecosystem, northern France, integrating ecological data from the years 1996 to 2002. The Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) approach was used to model the trophic flows in 6 spatial compartments leading to 6 distinct EwE models: the navigation channel and the two channel flanks in the estuary proper, and 3 marine habitats in the eastern Seine Bay. Each model included 12 consumer groups, 2 primary producers, and one detritus group. Ecological network analysis was performed, including a set of indices, keystoneness, and trophic spectrum analysis to describe the contribution of the 6 habitats to the Seine estuary ecosystem functioning. Results showed that the two habitats with a functioning most related to a...

Trace metal contamination in estuarine fishes from Vitória Bay, ES, Brazil BABT
Joyeux,Jean-Christophe; Campanha Filho,Edmar Augusto; Jesus,Honério Coutinho de.
Muscular tissue from wild-caught mullet (Mugil spp.) and snook (Centropomus spp.) was analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometry to determine muscle contamination levels for cadmium, chromium, copper, lead and zinc and evaluate risks to human health associated with seafood consumption. Fishes were captured by subsistence fishermen in Vitória Bay, a Brazilian tropical estuary with numerous outfalls of untreated industrial and residential sewage. Based on the premisses that subsistence fisherman and local consumer show weak (culinary or other) preferences within the taxa studied, analyses were conducted and results are reported for genera. Snook cadmium, chromium, copper and zinc concentrations were positively correlated with size or weight. Mullet chromium...
